Title in french : Musée de la Marine

Type : historic

City : Marseille

What a nice surprise is this small museum situated in the beautiful building of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Marseille! With 400 years of existence, this institution sitting proudly on the Canebière shows many paintings and documents about the time when Marseille was the first port of France.

Like any good Marine Museum, large models of yachts and other ships adorn the hallways. But very quickly, the huge portraits of Napoleon III and the Empress catch the visitors'attention.

Then we are projected into another dimension: the port of Marseille, 150 years ago, when most of the French commerce transited on its docks, with a strong smell of coffee and spices from the colonies.

The paintings perfectly depict the world of the docks, the hard work but also the mixture of peoples, the mixing of cultures, confirming its position as the gateway to the East.

The next room is about the industrial development of the local ports, the arrival of mechanization on land and sea, the landscape that becomes different...

After an impressive old diving suit and its lead shoes, you will walk to the present Old Port, now dedicated to boating and tourism, but still retaining perfumes from Africa.
