Title in french : Musée Cantini
Type : modern / contemporary
City : MarseilleJules Cantini, great marble artisan and art lover, acquired the hotel under the Second Empire. As a great sponsor, he donated the building and its collections to the City in 1916 to turn it into a museum. What follows is a significant acquisition policy and deposit by the state, which is now one of the finest collections of France.
Often, the visitor does not expect to find so many renowned artists in these places: Bacon, Picasso, Léger, Kandinsky, Le Corbusier, Miro, Masson, Ernst, Brauner, Balthus, Dufy ... All are grouped in galleries on the first floor, and there is a safe bet that a single visit would not satisfy you.
The ground and top floors are normally devoted to temporary exhibitions, the ground floor usually welcoming works of contemporary art. 2013 has seen the exhibitions of the monumental paintings of Matta or the impressive sculptures of Caesar.
